2007 - 2017

  • Developed the South Australian pelagic shark research capability between 2005-2007. 
  • Conducted stakeholder meetings, sourced funding and prepared research grants focusing on state and national priorities for highly migratory pelagic sharks.
  • Developed suitable approaches for satellite tagging of pelagic sharks in shelf waters in 2007.
  • Extended science and management outcomes to a wide range of industry, non-governmental and public stakeholders and during national and international conferences.
  • Provided management advice to Commonwealth government agencies on pelagic shark and ray species and listings (EPBC, CMS and CITES).
  • Developed International collaborations with researchers on multi-jurisdictional research papers and assessments of pelagic shark populations and fisheries.
  • Worked with the Alinytjara Wilurara Natural Resource Management (AWNRM) in Ceduna in 2009 to develop a recreational fishery survey in the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area (IPA). Co-investigator on a research project using satellite tags to assess fidelity of mulloway in the Great Australian Bight (GAB) Marine Park and Yalata IPA.
  • Supervised staff, and PhD students in the office, laboratory, and during fieldwork on offshore islands and large research vessels in gulf, shelf and shelf slope waters.
  • Co-investigator on a Safework SA funded research project to test the efficacy of the Shark Shield (Freedom 7) electric deterrent on white sharks.
  • Deployed acoustic tags on bronze whaler and dusky sharks and an array of receivers in Gulf St. Vincent to assess residency times and movement patterns in a gulf nursery area.
  • Co-investigator on a project to assess the site fidelity of western blue groper and harlequin fish.
  • Contributed to a project on the site fidelity of eastern blue groper in the Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve in Sydney, NSW.
  • Principle editor and coordinator of CSIRO, University, and SARDI scientists during the development of the literature review and gaps analysis on the physical processes, biodiversity and ecology of the GAB region in June 2013.
  • Contributed to research project applications for GAB Research Program Theme 4 (Projects 4.1 and 4.2). Status distribution and abundance of iconic species and apex predators in the GAB.
  • Development of the offshore pelagic shark survey that was a component of GAB Research Program Project 4.1. 
  • Contributed to development of ecosystem models for the GAB, Spencer Gulf, and Gulf St. Vincent during FRDC Projects and the GAB Research Program between 2010-2015.
  • Managed a program to monitor the residency of white sharks and the cage-diving industry in the Neptune Islands Group Marine Park between 2013-2015. Tasks included deployment of acoustic tags on white sharks, supervision and coordination of an e-logbook for the cage-diving industry, coordination of a photo-ID catalogue and reporting.
  • Co-developed and organised a formalised acoustic tagging data-sharing agreement between DEW, SARDI, CSIRO and WA Fisheries during FRDC Project 2014-020.
  • Contributed to and chaired the pelagic long-lining session at the International workshop run by the South Pacific Commission, NIWA, and Areas Beyond National Jurisdictions on post-release mortality of pelagic sharks in Wellington, NZ in February 2017.
  • Provided advice to the SA Government on Commonwealth Government shark mitigation and deterrent measures in 2017.
  • Presented at SA Parliament House in November 2018 on outcomes of white shark research, future management and monitoring options in response to a Shark Mitigation and Deterrent measures report, as Member/Scientific advisor to the SA Shark Response Plan.
  • Led projects involving the electronic tagging of shortfin makos, white sharks, common threshers, blue sharks, dusky sharks, bronze whalers, and iconic reef fishes on commercial, recreational and charter vessels.
  • Conducted spatial analyses of satellite tracking and habitat modelling data for pelagic sharks.
  • Completed a formal review of impacts of localised depletion of small pelagic fishes on predators and ecosystems for the Commonwealth Government Department of the Environment and the Expert Panel in relation to the operation of large factory trawlers.
  • Developed ethics applications, Research Mortality Allowance applications for SBT, AFMA research permits, SA Gov Ministerial Exemptions, permit requests to undertake and report on research in Commonwealth and State Marine Parks, and Marine Fishing Areas (zones).
  • Participated in two NOAA and National Marine Fisheries Service surveys of juvenile pelagic shark between the southern Californian Bight and the border with Mexico (Baja Peninsula). Deployed a large number of satellite tags on shortfin makos, blue sharks, smooth hammerheads and common thresher sharks from chartered commercial pelagic longline vessels.
  • Contributed to the Tagging of Pacific Predators (TOPP), Wildlife Tracking, and tracs animal tracking online portals for sharing of satellite tracking data with the public.
  • Communicated with and contributed to the media, public and fishery stakeholders about research highlights.
  •  Chaired and coordinated the SARDI Aquatic Sciences and PIRSA Fisheries and Aquaculture Seminar Series from 2011-2014.

  • Completed and led a federally funded review of northern mackerel research. This review involved an assessment of the degree to which research and development met management needs, a cost-benefit analysis of research projects, an evaluation of strategic research plans and identification of research gaps.
  • Planned multi-day surveys on RV Ngerin to assess performance indicators for Benthic Protection Zone in the Commonwealth GAB Marine Park. This involved sediment sampling, collection of oceanographic data, benthic trawls, and sediment sampling for invertebrates and fish in isolated shelf areas of the GAB in 2002.

SARDI Small Pelagic Fishes SubProgram

1999 - 2003

  • Conducted ten sardine egg and larval surveys (10-14 d) between 1999 and 2002 throughout shelf waters of SA.
  • Conducted a blue mackerel egg and larval survey in shelf and slope waters of SA.
  • Organised sampling and field equipment for four surveys (10-14 d) to determine the spawning biomass of sardine in SA shelf waters in 2001 and 2002.
  • Collected biological and dietary data for southern blue-fin tuna for use in ecological models.
  • Operated and maintained oceanographic equipment (CTD with Chelsea fluorometer) and software.
  • Conducted biological analysis and age determination of sardines from commercial catches.
  • Completed an analysis and identification of the SA zooplankton assemblage.
  • Was responsible for practical supervision of three overseas students during zooplankton ecology projects and fisheries biology training, and supervision of an Honours student during a project investigating the growth rates of sardine larvae.
  • Conducted regular maintenance of small research vessels and sampling equipment.
  • Used and maintained a large (>25,000 records) pelagic fish database.
  • Conducted analyses of sardine fishery catch, effort, age structure and reproductive data, and assisted with preparation of fishery assessment and FRDC reports.
  • Liaised with commercial fishers and processors, and AQIS regarding imported baitfish for the tuna industry.

Marine Vessel Experience

  • Twenty-four, small pelagic fish assessment and GAB ecosystems surveys (10–14 d) on RV Ngerin in shelf and slope waters of the GAB between 1999 and 2007. One egg and larval survey (7 d) for spawning biomass assessment of King George whiting in 2018.
  • Two research surveys (6 d) to the western GAB to monitor benthic performance indicators of the status of marine communities in the GAB Marine Park.
  • Three years of ichthyoplankton and juvenile sardine sampling (monthly) in SARDI research vessels at night in gulf and offshore waters.
  •  Five, surveys (6–10 d) in shelf waters of GAB to collect biological data on seabirds, seals, and tuna, and deploy satellite tags on seals.
  • One blue mackerel egg and larval survey (10 d) in NSW shelf waters on RV Bluefin.
  • Four trips (7–10 d) on commercial automatic long-line FV Rahi Aroha to deploy satellite tags on shortfin mako and blue sharks in 2008.
  • Four trips (7–10 d) on commercial shark gillnet vessels to collect biological samples from pelagic sharks in 2008/2009.
  • Three western blue groper acoustic tagging expeditions at Kangaroo Island in 2009.
  •  Numerous trips in continental shelf waters on gamefishing vessels to satellite tag shortfin makos and blue sharks between 2009 and 2014.
  • Two surveys (24 d) in the southern Californian Bight on FV Southern Horizon during a pelagic shark research survey with NOAA/NMFS, La Jolla in 2009 and 2011.
  • Several multiple day trips on commercial long-line vessels to collect biological samples from coastal pelagic sharks caught in the fishery between 2009 and 2010.
  • One survey (14 d) in the central GAB to assess the use of automatic long-lines to target gummy shark, and investigate the post-release survival of school sharks using pop-up satellite archival tags in 2012.
  • Several weeks on game-fishing vessels in offshore shelf waters of Bass Strait, the GAB and the SA SE deploying electronic tags on pelagic sharks between 2007 and 2014.
  • Two longline surveys (14 d) of pelagic sharks on FCV Southern Ranger to deploy satellite tags and collect species distribution data during the GAB Program in 2015.
  • Conducted research on commercial vessels with the following gear-types: offshore pelagic long-lining (Target - broadbill swordfish, tuna and shark), demersal large-mesh gill-netting and automatic long-line (gummy and school shark), and inshore demersal and pelagic long-line (whaler shark and snapper).
